Eve of Destruction
A few words in the news a couple of years ago: Earthquake in Christchurch. I almost immediately forgot about it. Now I see. Now I remember. Now I start to understand what it means.

I leave the North Island. The ferry hits a rough sea. Well, it is actually the other way round. Sea sickness grabs my stomach. I stay on deck, use the steady horizon and the fresh air as remedy. Then we enter the calm waters of the Marlborough Sounds.

I find myself surrounded by an abundance of two- or three-story buildings that sparkle with the charm of a frontier town.

Shelter from the Storm
I thought I escaped Cyclone Lusi when I left Auckland in horizontal rain. Well it caught up with me. The severe weather warning did not. Now I am stuck for hours in a building that normally has a panoramic view on Wellington. All I see now is a Wall of Grey. There is glass all around me: Torrential rains pummel it, severe winds push it.
