Wildlife and locals seem to live in symbiosis. The animals lure the tourists, and get their habitats protected in return. A good deal for both sides, it seems.
I reach a more densely populated area on the east coast. The city climbs up the hills.
I walk past the station, …
… cross the tracks …
… into the harbour area …
… where the local industry looks somewhat like this.
Well, there is chocolate and beer, but i still wonder what it is like to make a living around here. The locals pride themselves of their proverbial ingenuity, and indeed they seem to have a natural talent to spot and take advantage of opportunities, like: tourists and their desire to see the wildlife.
The concept goes somewhat like this: You know some places where you can find iconic or cute animals, buy a used van and offer your tour on colourful flyers you pin to walls where tourists can see them. Then you wait for the phone call. I call.
We drive past farmland …
… out to the peninsula …
… where a penguin …
… and some seals are on duty.
We arrive at a private project build around a penguin colony and enter the trenches …
… to visit the penguins in their homes.
From a lookout …
… I watch the penguins …
… coming home. Win-win-win, I dare say.
